Ayurvedic medicine is one of the oldest healing systems in the world, originating in the ancient civilizations of India documented 5000 years ago. Ayurveda in Sanskrit means "knowledge of life." Panchkarma is based on the central concept of Ayurveda that disease is caused by the build-up of toxins which causes an imbalances in three doshas in the mind - body complex. Panchkarma - Ayurvedic Complete Detoxification and Cleansing Programme Panchkarma is Ayurveda's primary purification and detoxification treatment. Panchkarma is derived from two words i.e. PANCH meaning five and KARMA meaning steps ( cleansing procedures). These five procedures of eliminating toxins from the body are Vamana, Virechana, Nasya, Basti and Raktamokshana. This series of five procedure helps remove deep rooted toxins from the body thereby balancing the doshas (energies that govern all biological functions).
Basic Shodhanas: Cleansing Methods
1) Vaman: Therapeutic vomiting or emesis
2) Virechan : Therapeutic purgation
3) Basti: Medicated enema
4) Nasya: Elimination of toxins through the nose
5) Raktmokshana: Blood Letting
6) Abhyang: Ayurvedic Massage
7) Shirodhara: Pouring liquids over the forehead
8) Pichu: Palliative treatment for ailments
9) Netra Basti: Preventative Ayurvedic treatment for the eyes
10) Janu Basti: Procedure done on knee joints.
11) Hrud Basti: To strengthen the heart muscles
12) Kati Basti: Treatment for musculoskeletal disorders of the spine
13) Swedana: Medical Steam
14) Pinda Sweda: Commonly used for relief of pain and gaining strength to the tissues.
15) Patra Pottali Sweda: It refers to the sudation performed by specially prepared bundle of medicinal leaves.
